Second brush fire reported in southwest Miami-Dade County - Local 10

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. -

Firefighters are now working to extinguish a second brush fire in southwest Miami-Dade County, fire rescue officials said.

Authorities said the second fire sparked at Southwest 127th Avenue and 120th Street.

Meanwhile, the large brush fire that broke out Sunday afternoon is 50 percent contained.

The fire has burned 880 acres and numerous streets have been closed as a precaution. The Florida Forest Service reported at least 10 structures were threatened as of 3 p.m. Monday.

Southwest Eighth Street was also closed in both directions from Krome Avenue to 137th Avenue.

Local 10 News reporter Roger Lohse was in the area at Southwest 157th Avenue and Eighth Street Monday morning as firefighters were putting out a hot spot.

Forestry officials said while the fire is now partially contained, there are still concerns. They said even though the closest neighborhood is about a half-mile from the leading edge of the fire, they are not out of the woods just yet.

"Fire spread is always a concern," Arnold Piedrahata of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said. "It jumped Eighth Street into other wooded areas, so what's to stop it from jumping into other residential areas? If the fire flares up and and it endangers any surrounding residential areas, we will re-dispatch however many units necessary to protect these homes."

Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue officials said Monday's hot spot is an indication that embers from the fire travel and can spark in other areas.

Fire crews hope that rain will help put out any other hot spots.

While no residents have been injured in the brush fire, firefighters rescued a black kitten that was hiding in a beer box in an area just feet away from the fire.

The kitten appeared to be unharmed and in good health.
