The Southwest High girls’ cross country team continues its dominance in the Imperial Valley League, improving to 3-0 in league at the halfway mark.

On Thursday, the Eagles beat Central Union High, 17-44, winning the top three sports and fifth through seventh spots as well.

“The girls have worked really hard this year to be where they are,” Southwest head coach Richard Bird said.

Senior Kytzia Ruiz, junior Mauryn Wilde and sophomore Gabrielle Sauceda have finished as the top three in each of their IVL meets so far.

“They’ve only beaten each other,” Bird said.

With three meets to go — the toughest against Brawley Union High on Oct. 23 in El Centro — the Eagles have placed themselves as the team to beat.

“We’re hoping to continue with what we hope we’ve been doing,” Bird said.

The boys’ race is a much closer one with Calexico High leading the way after a 17-39 win against Brawley Union High on Thursday in Brawley.

Southwest and Central trail with only one loss and a vital meet between the Bulldogs and Central next week could tie things atop the league. The winner will be determined at the IVL finals Nov. 13.
