Police: arrest made in shooting of boy, 11 - Atlanta Journal Constitution

Atlanta police have made an arrest in Wednesday night’s shooting of an 11-year-old boy in southwest Atlanta.

A police spokesman said the name of the male suspect was being withheld Thursday because the investigation is still active.

The boy was in stable condition Wednesday night after being shot around 8:30 p.m. while outside in the 900 block of Coleman Street, Atlanta Officer John Chafee said.

Investigators believe the child was an innocent bystander and was struck as two groups of people exchanged gunfire in the street.

“The preliminary investigation indicates that this actually started at Arthur Street and Sims Street,” Chafee said.

After the child was shot, his brother carried him a few houses down the street to his home, where a family member called 911. The child was transported to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.

A neighbor, Carvale Flemings, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the boy was outside the home when he was shot by people walking down the street. Flemings said he heard at least 12 shots before the boy started screaming.
