The Southwest softball team was the one that put up the gaudy offensive numbers. It was the one that seemingly always had a reply for whatever the opponent did.
Those attributes were key reasons why the Dragons are in the Region IV-5A final for the first time.
But San Marcos gave the Dragons a little taste of their own medicine Thursday at the North East ISD Complex.
Stephanie Marmolejo hit two home runs and drove in six runs as San Marcos toppled Southwest 17-7 in five innings in Game 1 of their regional final series.
With the run-rule victory, the Rattlers moved a win from earning their third trip to the UIL state tournament and their first since 1996. They also went in 1993.
Game 2 is at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the SAISD Complex.
“I don't remember the last time anybody scored that many runs on us,” Southwest coach Sandra Hernandez said. “It was very uncharacteristic for our team to allow that. But like I just told them, we win together, (and) we're going to lose together. Tomorrow's a new day.”
That's what the Dragons (33-10) are holding on to. In the second round against Judson, Southwest lost the first game but rallied to win the series.
“We're not losing without a fight,” Southwest junior shortstop Kristal Salinas said. “At the point where we were losing that bad ... I was just thinking, the worst you can do is not try.”
On this night, even that wasn't enough to slow down the Rattlers (32-9), who pounded 16 hits and scored 12 straight runs after falling behind 2-0 after the top of the first inning.
San Marcos responded with nine runs on seven hits in the bottom of the frame, including the first of Marmolejo's pair of two-run homers and doubles by Gabby Guerrero, Ciandra Kinere, Victoria Vasquez and Mariah Delgado. Marmolejo also added a two-run double as the Rattlers sent 13 batters to the plate.
