McGarvey donates space for Love That Dress! center
McGarvey Development donated a 7,600-square-foot commercial building located at 13130 Westlinks Terrace in Gateway. This space will be used as this year's LTD! 6 Dress Processing Center for the PACE Center for Girls of Lee County's Sixth Annual Love that Dress! event. Thousands of new and gently loved dresses will be collected at various dress collection parties held in the next few months leading up to the big annual Love That Dress! event in August.
The event will be held on Aug. 27 from 5-9 p.m. at The Embassy Suites in Estero. Guests will also enjoy the event's silent auction, camaraderie, and cocktails.
All of the proceeds from Love That Dress! 6 will benefit PACE Center for Girls, a non-residential juvenile delinquency prevention and intervention program targeting the unique needs of girls, ages 12 to 18, facing challenges such as physical and sexual abuse, domestic violence, substance abuse, foster care, neglect, death of a parent, family history of incarceration and declining grades.
For information, contact Kendra Sutton, event chair, at LoveThatDress6@gmail.com or 910-6414 or Sally Kee, PACE Center for Girls special events coordinator, at Sally.Kee@pacecenter.org or 425-2366
Volunteer honored for work with nonprofit
Rich Durnwald is being recognized by Northwestern Mutual, through its foundation, for his work with Children's Advocacy Center of Southwest Florida as a recipient of the company's 20th annual Community Service Award.
Durnwald, a financial advisor at Northwestern Mutual – Fort Myers, was selected for his outstanding volunteerism, earning him a $15,000 grant for the advocacy center. The honor identifies 16 Northwestern Mutual financial professionals that demonstrate exemplary service with a local nonprofit, and awards the organization with a grant on behalf of the volunteer's work.
Children's Advocacy Center is a crisis center that helps mentally, sexually and physically abused children through therapeutic counseling, parenting education and preventive programs. Durnwald became involved with the organization in 2008 when he was asked to participate in a capital campaign and was struck by the number of children affected by violence in his community. Currently, he serves as the board president.
The nonprofit will use the grant money to fund its Pine Manor afterschool and summer program, one of the organization's community outreach prevention programs for at-risk children.

Stroke award presented to G.C. Medical Center
The American Heart Association presented Gulf Coast Medical Center with its third Get With the Guidelines Gold Plus Award. Each of Lee Memorial Health System's four acute hospitals received the Get With the Guidelines Award in 2014.
Gulf Coast Medical Center also received the association's Target: Stroke Honor Roll for meeting stroke quality measures that reduce the time between hospital arrival and treatment with the clot-buster tPA, the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke. People who suffer a stroke who receive the drug within three hours of the onset of symptoms may recover quicker and are less likely to suffer severe disability.
