KALAMAZOO, MI — HealthCare Midwest has joined the Bronson Healthcare family of companies and is now doing business as Bronson HealthCare Midwest.

HealthCare Midwest will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of Bronson and all of HealthCare Midwest’s medical practices and outpatient services will now have new names. Its physicians, staff, phone numbers and locations will remain unchanged, however.

By coming together the health organizations “will be in a better position to handle emerging changes in the national healthcare delivery system through collaboration and innovation resulting in better coordination of care for patients and families in the region,” according to a statement by Bronson, which announced plans in November to explore the transition.

Bronson HealthCare Midwest became official on Monday, July 1.

“This is a great step forward for all of us,” Dr. Robert Isacksen, a member of the Bronson HealthCare Midwest operating committee said in a press release. “Bronson and HealthCare Midwest share a passion for excellence and for making decisions based on what is in the best interest of the patient. Aligning our organizations will help us continue to advance clinical quality, integrate information technology, and recruit and retain a solid base of excellent providers. It’s a win-win for our community and for our patients.”

Bronson Healthcare is a not-for-profit health system that serves the residents of 10 counties in southwest Michigan, primarily through Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, Bronson Battle Creek Hospital and Bronson Lakeview Hospital in Paw Paw. It has a longstanding relationship with HealthCare Midwest.

HealthCare Midwest is a 20-year-old, Kalamazoo-based, multidisciplinary physician group involved in family medicine, internal medicine, bariatric surgery, gastroenterology, neurology, ophthalmology, and orthopedics and sports medicine (including hand and elbow specialists, foot and ankle specialists and joint specialists).

It has a workforce of more than 400 people, including 80 physicians and mid-level providers. They provide care at locations in Kalamazoo, Portage, Battle Creek, Paw Paw, South Haven, Coldwater, Three Rivers, Sturgis and Allegan. As part of Bronson, it will bring the employment roster at the healthcare group to 7,100 workers in Calhoun, Kalamazoo and Van Buren counties.

Jim McKernan will continue as senior executive of Bronson HealthCare Midwest with a physician-led operational structure, according to information provided by the hospital group.

An operating committee made up of Bronson HealthCare Midwest physicians and Bronson Healthcare executives will work together to set direction and oversee operations, according to Bronson, and overall governance will come from the Bronson Healthcare system board of directors.
