BAY CITY -- The Bay City Southwest little leaguers closed out the 10-11 year old sectionals against the Birmingham Braves Sunday with a 9-4 win at Kolb Field.
Bay City Southwest, pictured celebrating winning districts, had more to celebrate Sunday by beating the Birmingham Braves 9-4 to advance to the state tourney.
Southwest advanced to the state tournament in Kalamazoo by winning the best of three series 2-0.
For the second straight day, Bay City jumped out to a lead in the first inning. It scored a pair of runs behind RBI singles from Dakota Wall and Dustyn Lucas.
Birmingham came back to tie the game with two runs in the second. The Braves grabbed a 3-2 lead in the third when Ryan VanHulle stole home on a passed ball.
Brendan Beaver's three-run triple in the fourth helped Southwest pull away. He knocked in Austin Dinauer, Zac Lewandowski and Adam Shay off VanHulle to give his team a 5-3 lead.
Bay City added four insurance runs in the top of the sixth. Lucas knocked in two more runs with a triple in the inning.
Southwest now advances to the state tournament in Kalamazoo that starts Saturday.
