LOS ANGELES — Music. Film. Interactive. Sports?
South by Southwest, the pop culture festival in Austin, Tex., said on Tuesday that it would add sports-related films and events to its growing portfolio of interests.
Beginning with next year’s festival, a new sports track, called SXsports, will have a three-day run — from March 7 through March 9 — as part of the existing film and interactive programs. Both of those begin on Friday, March 7, and continue during the following week.
In an interview, Rebecca Feferman, a festival programmer who will supervise the sports track, said it would include movies, panel discussions and presentations that will stop short of actual sporting events.
Asked whether the sports track was expected eventually to match the music, film and interactive programs as a self-standing element of the festival, Ms. Feferman said: “We’re taking it one day at a time. We see the potential in the sports area.”
South by Southwest began in 1987 as a music festival, then added a film and multimedia component. Those later evolved into the current film and interactive programs.
The festival said in an announcement that the new sports component was expected to include presentations by Bill Simmons and Nate Silver, whose Web ventures are associated with the ESPN network, and Peter Guber, a sports entrepreneur, among others.
Ms. Feferman said the festival had not yet made its film selections. In the recent past, she said, sports-related films have included “Maidentrip,” “The Short Game” and “Pelada,” all of which were documentaries. But programmers, she said, are searching for narrative features, shorts and even music videos with a sports connection — and with something to say.
“We’re looking for more than just topicality,” Ms. Feferman said.
