Six home runs sail out of the park as Bay City Southwest moves on in Major ... - Bay City Times

home_run.JPGBen VanSumeren is greeted at home plate by teammates after hitting his second home run of Sunday's game against Saginaw Township South.

BAY CITY -- The Bay City fireworks show had nothing on the Bay City Southwest all-star team.

Southwest had its fair share of big blasts that wowed the crowd as well.

Southwest slammed five of the game's six home runs while downing Saginaw Township South 13-4 in the Major Boys Little League district tournament Sunday at Bay City Northeast.

Northeast downed Bad Axe 8-0 in the tourney's other game at Sovereign Field, setting the stage for a Northeast vs. Southwest clash at 5 p.m. Tuesday, with the winner advancing to the final four of district action.

Southwest got it done with the long ball as Ben VanSumeren slammed two home runs and Hayden Jatczak, Branden Brown and Rayferd Ralph each tagged one. Victor Schoenherr joined VanSumeren with three hits while Garret Glysz and Jatczak each tallied two hits.

Jatczak, the first of four pitchers, notched the win for Southwest.

Gage Howart drilled a three-run home run for Saginaw South while Sean Nowosatka ripped a triple. South meets Pigeon in a must-win game at 5 p.m. Monday in the double-eliimination tournament.

Bay City Northeast 8, Bad Axe 0

Brian Elder was untouchable for much of the contest, firing a complete-game shutout to propel Northeast to victory. Elder rung up 10 batters on strikes.

Kyle Brissette had a two-run single to key the Northeast offense while Jacob Pavlawk and Cameron Worden each had pivotal RBIs.

Jack Fisher and Gavin Guigar each had hits for Bad Axe, which faces Essexville-Hampton in an elimination game at 7 p.m. Monday.

Bay City Northwest 22, Caro 0

Nick Dardas went wild with three home runs, powering Northwest to the one-sided win over Caro in the district clash at North Saginaw Township.

Tyler David, Evan Schlatter and Adam Randall also homered in the victory, with David tagging four hits, and Randall and Carson Cooley joining Dardas with three hits. David started the game with a leadoff home run and Northwest never looked back.

David, Cooley and Austin Lawless combined to fire a no-hitter as Northwest got the job done on offense and defense.

Cody Reagle added two hits in the win for Northwest, which plays North Saginaw for a chance at the final four at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
