Bay City Southwest rallies from the brink to force winner-take-all rematch ... - Bay City Times

BAY CITY -- Bay City Northwest was storming toward a district championship for the first five innings.

But everybody went home talking about Bay City Southwest after the sixth.

With a season-saving charge for the ages, Southwest rallied for four runs in its final at-bat to nab a stunning 8-7 victory over Northwest that forced a winner-take-all clash for the Little League 10-11 district championship.

Southwest and Northwest return to Bay City South End for a 6 p.m. Wednesday rematch that determines a berth in the sectional tournament. The winner hosts a two-team, best-of-three sectional that is the final step before the Little League 10-11 state tournament.

For the longest time Tuesday, it looked like Northwest was sectional-bound. Untouched through the first three games of the district, NWLL built a 7-4 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.

But Southwest made its final swings count. Brendan Beaver and Dustyn Lucas singled, Zac Lewandowski smashed a two-run triple, Dakota Wall lofted a sacrifice fly and -- just like that -- the score was knotted at 7-7.

Southwest didn't stop there, as Anthony Bernard stroked another triple and Clay Weiss ripped a liner that kissed off the second baseman's glove and bounded into center field for walk-off single that launched Southwest's on-field celebration.

Northwest showed some never-give-up drive of its own, scoring all seven of its runs with two outs. Nick Putman hit an RBI single in the first inning, Tyler Lazarowicz doubled to key a two-run, two-out rally in the third and Branden Brill brought home a two-out run in the fourth for a 4-2 lead.

The margin jumped to 7-2 in the fifth as Nick Putman and Mason Facundo singled, Dylan Wesenick laced a two-out RBI double and Carter Esch followed with a two-run single.

But Southwest scratched out a pair of runs in the fifth on singles by Dakota Wall, Matt Jezowski and Adam Shay to draw within 7-4, setting the stage for the climactic sixth.

Now, in a repeat of the Little League 11-12 final, Southwest and Northwest have a one-game district championship showdown.
