A large portion of the Southwest Freeway was shut down Friday morning after a two-car collision and fire caused the busy road to be closed down for a police investigation.
Kese Smith with the Houston Police Department said that the accident, in the 7200 block of the Southwest Freeway, occurred just before 8 a.m.
According to Smith the driver of a white Nissan Altima had stopped his vehicle in a lane of the freeway near an overpass. It is not yet known if there was a mechanical malfunction involved. A black Jeep Liberty collided with the Altima, and the Altima burst into flames.
A passenger in the Altima was able to get out and was transported to an area hospital. The driver of the Altima, age 30, died at the scene according to Smith. Passersby attempted to put out the fire.
Houston police were investigating the accident most of the morning as traffic was diverted onto feeder roads.
The adult driver and a child passenger in the Liberty were also transported to an area hospital.
The cause of death and identity of the deceased driver was still being determined Friday afternoon.
