A teenage boy was killed and two other boys were injured in a shooting Friday afternoon in the city's Marquette Park neighborhood.
The shooting happened about 3:30 p.m. in the 3100 block of West 64th Place, said Chicago Police Department spokesman Veejay Zala.
According to preliminary reports, the boy was shot in the head; he was pronounced dead on the scene at 3:40 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. Family at the scene said the boy was 15. He was later identified as Jahakel Clark, of the 6500 block of South Fairfield Avenue, according to the medical examiner.
A 14-year-old boy also suffered a wound to his right leg and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition had stabilized, Zala said. A third boy, 16, was also hospitalized with a graze wound to his hand, police said. He was treated at Holy Cross Hospital.
The body of the deceased teenager remained covered by a sheet on the sidewalk several hours later as family members gathered near the yellow police tape blocking off the crime scene. A young girl in the group wore a Hello Kitty headband while accompanying her relatives.
A woman approached the scene and said she’d heard it was her son underneath the sheet, but she didn’t believe it. She had shown police a photo of her boy and told them about a tattoo on his body.
"That's what they say," the woman said, shaking her head. "It's not him."
Not long after, the boy's grandfather approached the scene and asked detectives if he could get a closer look at the body to "make sure it's not my grandson."
A detective walked over and asked to speak with the mother. They walked to the end of the block, surrounded by the boy's family, and the detective informed them that it was indeed their relative who had died.
The family closed in around the mother and hugged her as she let out a pained cry. The boy's grandfather leaned against an empty storefront, clutching at his heart as tears streamed down his face.
Police are investigating.
