The Southwest Licking school board accepted Cindy Zaino's resignation July 25.

Zaino, who spent three and a half years on the board and served as vice president, said family responsibilities have made it impossible for her to continue her term.

"It was not an easy decision," she said, "but family comes first.

"It's been an honor to serve on the board."

Zaino announced her decision to leave July 18 and the board made it official July 25 with a 3-0 vote, with Roger Zeune absent.

Board member Don Huber said although board members were sad to see her leave, denying her request for resignation was really not an option.

"It's her decision," he said.

The board named Debra Moore vice president.

Huber said the school board will hold a special meeting Aug. 8 to take a look at who will run for school board in the Nov. 5 general election.

If only one candidate meets the Aug. 7 filing deadline, Huber said, it's likely the board will name that person to take Zaino's place for the rest of the year. He said whomever is chosen would have to run in November for a full term.

Huber said if more than one candidate files to run for school board in November, none of the candidates would be chosen to replace Zaino through the end of the year.

In addition, Huber said, he and Zeune both plan to run for re-election in November.

Zaino said she has complete confidence in the other board members, Superintendent Robert Jennell and the direction the district is heading.

She said she will always maintain her support and involvement in the district, even if she's no longer actively serving on the board.

"I hope there will be people to step up and run with the same kind of passion I had," she said.

Moore called Zaino's departure "bittersweet."

While she said she is looking forward to her new duties as vice president, Moore expects it to be a challenge to step into Zaino's position, even if only for five months.

Moore said she also appreciates the confidence the other board members placed in her to name her vice president.

"It's pretty honorable, I think," she said.
