A young child is dead after he was hit by a car in southwest Birmingham Monday night.
The boy was hit along Northland Avenue Southwest between 24th Street and 19th Place Southwest around 7 p.m.
The child was taken to Children's of Alabama hospital, Birmingham police Sgt. Tim McCord said. The 2-year-old boy died at the hospital, according to Lt. Scott Thurmond.
The car that hit the child was not on scene, McCord said.
Steve Carpenter, the boy's uncle, said residents have been trying to get speed bumps along Northland Avenue but haven't been successful. He said there was another car wreck recently at the same point on the street when a car drove too fast.
"They hit that corner (at 24th Street Southwest) and it's a freeway shot," he said.
Despite the wrecks, he said they haven't been able to get city officials to add speed bumps.
"You think they care about this neighborhood?" he said. "They don't."
