Southwest experiences passenger deluge at Midway Sunday morning

CHICAGO (WLS) --

The Southwest lines at Midway International Airport stretched down the Orange Line corridor Sunday as an influx of travelers headed home after Thanksgiving.

Southwest Airlines said things became crowded around 4 a.m. The Sun-Times reported that the line was still long at around 8:30 a.m. The lines streched from the Southwest counters all the way to the Orange Line entrance.

By 9:15 a.m., traveler volume appeared to be back to normal after customers reported lines stretched a mile long.

"This happens sometimes," Chicago Aviation Department spokeswoman Karen Pride said. "There was a period of time earlier this morning, between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m., that lines were long because that is when most people are traveling for the holiday period."

Sunday is the busiest day of the Thanksgiving travel period, which started Tuesday and ends next Tuesday, officials said.

The latest information from the Department of Aviation, which was sent at 7:30 a.m., states there were no flight delays at O'Hare or Midway airports.
