The YMCAs of Greater St. Louis and Southwest Illinois are becoming one.
The boards of both YMCAs agreed to combine operations and become known as Gateway Region YMCA.
The merger takes effect March 1 and the new board of directors will include members and leaders from both YMCAs.
“The YMCA of Southwest Illinois and the YMCA of Greater St. Louis are excited to combine the strengths of our organizations to better serve the communities where we operate," Al Kent, board chairman of the YMCA of Greater St. Louis, said Wednesday. “By taking this action, we have set forth on a course that positions the Y to serve more youth and families, and improve more lives at a time when the needs for our services have never been greater.”
Bill Gavin, board chairman of YMCA of Southwest Illinois, said the two associations have long partnered on financial development and healthy living programs.
Merging the two Y's "is the natural next step" that will help the organization become more efficient and expand on its various programs.
The new association will cover St. Louis city and seven Missouri counties including St. Louis, St. Charles, Jefferson, Franklin, Washington, St. Francois, Ste. Genevieve, as well as St. Clair, Madison, Monroe, Randolph, Clinton and Marion counties in southwestern Illinois.
The Gateway Region YMCA will include 23 branches, with more than 200,000 members. and serving nearly 730,000 people through hundreds of programs and services.
Combined, the two associations provided more than $5.3 million for the Y's scholarship program, providing access to people of all incomes.
At this time, existing membership types and pricing structures will remain the same for members in both associations. No jobs are to be lost as a result of the merger.
