SAN ANTONIO — A fire that destroyed a home on the Southwest Side Wednesday afternoon started when fireworks ignited a Christmas tree, officials said.
SAFD Capt. Roger Lopez said children were playing with fireworks inside a home in the 500 Block of East Academy when sparks ignited a tree in the house.
Within minutes, Lopez said, the fire had spread throughout the structure.
Though the family had not located two cats who lived at the house, everyone inside was able to get out unharmed, Lopez said. A dog tied up in the back yard was also freed unscathed.
Lopez said the house was a total loss, and representative from the Red Cross would be assisting the family.
