Marysa Wilkinson is looking forward to the day when Toni Tupper is a full-time volleyball teammate at Creighton, not just during club season.
But that didn’t stop Lincoln Southwest’s 6-foot senior all-stater from being fired up about Tuesday night’s match at Lincoln Northeast against the 6-3 Tupper and her Rocket teammates.
Wilkinson hammered 20 kills, registered two ace blocks and served four aces in leading the Class A No. 3 Silver Hawks to a 25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 25-20 victory, their second in a week over Northeast, a ratings contender.
Her performance helped the Hawks (11-4) overcome 23 kills by Tupper, eight of which came in the Rockets’ third-set victory.
“I was definitely ready tonight. They’re kind of our rivals and we know we have to play well to beat them,” said Wilkinson, who is on the same Nebraska Juniors club team with Tupper in the offseason.
“I’m glad we’ll be on the same team in college,” Wilkinson added. “I don’t like playing against Toni because she’s a really good player who’s hard to stop.”
Southwest was never able to pull away in either of the first two sets as its largest lead during that span was four points early in the first set. The Silver Hawks also got offensive production from 6-1 sophomore outside hitter Allie Davis, who cracked 14 kills, seven of which came in the first two sets.
Northeast (5-10) built leads of 17-10 and 20-14 in the third set, only to see Southwest come back to tie it at 23 on a left-side kill from Davis. A kill from senior outside hitter Natalie Bohac put the Rockets at set point and Tupper finished it with a tip over the block.
Southwest regained control in the fourth set, pulling away to a 14-7 advantage it never relinquished. Wilkinson pounded six kills, registered an ace block and served two aces in the final set and Davis chipped in five kills and an ace block.
“When Marysa plays with confidence, she’s very hard to stop. She should be confident all the time,” said Southwest coach Mary Schropfer, whose team needed three sets to beat the Rockets during pool play of the LPS Classic on Friday.
After being a middle blocker her first three years of high school, “Marysa’s grown into her outside hitter position,” Schropfer added. “She’s still adjusting to some things, but she’s really started to embrace it. It will be fun to see where she is in a month. ”
Schropfer was pleased with her team’s defense and serving. Southwest served eight aces in the match from four different players, while senior libero Jill Bax led the back row play with 21 digs. Junior setter Madison Egger ignited the Silver Hawk offense with 40 assists.
The Rockets’ offense is expanding beyond just Tupper as they finished with 56 kills, eight more than Southwest. Bohac, a three-year starter who was not playing front row earlier in the season because of a shoulder injury, had 12 kills. Junior Kelli Holloway finished with nine kills from the right side and senior Chase Wolinski pounded eight from the middle.
After Northeast used a number of different setters earlier in the season, sophomore Addy Sellon has emerged as the Rockets’ starter in a 5-1 attack. She put up 49 assists. Junior libero Taylor Drake was the defensive leader with 21 digs.
“We saw some good things tonight,” Northeast coach Craig Songster said. “Our passing was spot-on for the most part, Addy Sellon did a nice job running the offense and we’re getting good swings from other kids besides Toni.”
