Union Way retail project connects Southwest Stark and Burnside - OregonLive.com

When developers laid their eyes on the old Red Cap Garage nightclub on Southwest Stark Street, they weren't necessary won over by the potential of the old mechanic shop that still had "service" and "crank case" etched on its massive, old-growth trusses.

They were inspired by what was on the other side: Burnside Street and its major tourist attraction, Powell's Books.

The 10,500-square-foot development of hand-picked retailers and restaurants marries the emerging neighborhood dubbed the West End, which counts the Ace Hotel as an anchor, Powell's long-heralded corner on Burnside, and its entryway into the Pearl District.

Hence the project's name: Union Way.

"We were thinking of the passages you see in Paris, London or the rojis in Japan," said Jonathan Ledesma, an associate with Project Ecological Development, which is based just a few blocks up on Southwest 13th Avenue. "We're blurring the line from public to private."

UNION_WAY_2_22319245.JPGWindows above store fronts allow customers walking down the alley to see how the trusses continue on the through the span of the building. One of the massive beams from the old mechanic shop still has "crank case" and "service" painted on its side.

The walkway is illuminated by a series of skylights -- three original to the building -- that provide natural light that glows off the knotty white walls covered in poplar wood from Boardman. Union Way's 12 shops will open throughout the summer, some in early July.

The lineup includes Micah Camden's Boxer Ramen, a sister to his Boxer Sushi on Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard that would be the first stop for folks entering on Stark. There's also a potential juice bar and pastry shop. Those still hankering for something sweet can hit Quin, a 185-square-foot candy closet operated by the folks of Portland-based Saint Cupcake.

Union Way will include New York-based home goods retailer Steven Alan's first stop north of San Francisco. The shop, which features a collection of young designers, will open in late July. Also new to Portland will be Self Edge, a three-store chain out of San Francisco featuring premium Japanese denim.

Danner Boots will open its first stand-alone store, expanding from the retail location at its headquarters in Northeast Portland. And the operators of Canoe, a longtime home goods retailer on Southwest Alder Street, will open Spruce Apothecary, a mixture of skin care products and other goods made locally and in Europe.

"This is planned," Ledesma said, "a mix of retailers from Portland as well as like-minded retailers opening their first shops in Portland."

The project will hold a kick-off party in August, after all of its shops are open.

In other retail news...

Northeast Portland:
Commercial real estate broker Urban Works announced last week that it has filled the last retail space at The Albert apartment building on North Williams Avenue. The newest shops allow shoppers to drink up and then, wash up.

Bella Mi Soap Company recently signed on, adding to The Tin Bucket, a beer bottle and growler-refill shop that opened two weeks ago. Those shops join Oro Di Napoli, a wood-fire Italian restaurant, and What's The Scoop ice cream.

Southeast Portland: D Street Village, the project housed in the long-empty Nature's Northwest building on Division Street, celebrated its grand opening last week. The 22,000-square-foot project includes apartments and office space with ground-floor retail shops. The Indian restaurant Bollywood Theater, which opened its first location on Northeast Alberta Street, will open there, along with another local restaurant chain that hasn't yet been named and the Imperial tap room, a bottle and growler-fill-up shop. D Street Village is also expected to feature the Xtend Barre pilates studio and the local startup florist Floare. The project still has a 1,500-square-foot space to fill, plus two smaller locations that don't face Division.

Hillsboro: Tanasbourne Shops, at Northwest 185th Avenue and Evergreen Parkway, has signed a number of new retailers. The strip mall is separate from the nearby Streets of Tanasbourne mall.

The smaller mall, anchored by Red Robin, Stanford's and U.S. Bank, says new tenants will include Verizon Wireless, Pacific Dental Services, Sleep Number Beds and MOD Pizza, an artisan pizza purveyor out of Seattle.
