The flight went from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to Tampa Bay International Airport on Sunday, and it was filled with passengers and members of the media. The company was purchased by Southwest in 2011 and is now fully integrated.
"With this special flight, we are celebrating history and setting our sights on a bright future for all of Southwest Airlines," said Bob Jordan, Southwest Airlines' Chief Commercial Officer and AirTran Airways President.
There are now four major airlines in the United States. American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and Southwest control over 80 percent of the market.
AirTran's jets will be repainted to look like Southwest's blue, red and yellow planes.
