Detroit Three people were taken into custody on suspicion of home invasion and attempted robbery after a lengthy police standoff ended Thursday morning, according to Detroit police.
Police said the suspects also held up four people an adult woman, her two small daughters and an adult male at gunpoint at the home on Central Street, near Lafayette, before 3 a.m. Thursday morning.
The suspects reportedly took the victims hostage but the four either escaped or were allowed to leave the dwelling.
The man was hospitalized after being roughed up, although his injuries were not believed to be life threatening, police said.
Detroit Police Officer Phillip Cook said one suspect exited the house at the same time that a victim was being ushered out by police. Officers from the departments special response unit recognized the suspect was not a victim and took him into custody. A second suspect surrendered himself without incident. Eventually police located the third suspect in the home and also took him into custody around 10 a.m., Cook said.
A cousin of the adult female victim was on the sidewalk in front of the victims home, holding the hands of the young girls as their mother spoke to a detective in a car nearby late Thursday morning.
The cousin, who declined to be identified, said he had been there since the early morning hours trying to help his family deal with the ordeal.
Its been a long night, he said.
The victims home, he said, will likely have to be abandoned. Windows facing the street were shattered, a result, the cousin said, of the tear gas canisters shot into the home.
Were going to have to board it up, he said. They cant be here anymore.
The house sits on a block occupied by fewer than 10 houses, of which one has been long abandoned from the looks of the vegetation thats overcome it. Piled in front of the vacant house next door was a discarded couch, reclining chair and rolled up matting from old carpet.
